How To Improve Memory Power

This is the second part of my article to improve memory power.

All about emotions; how they influence your feelings, and how feelings affect your thinking about a particular problem or studying. This article will make you realize why you feel this way and not the other way. Because it’s not about what you want, we all want more then we have sometimes, it’s all about what you do to get it, actually what you feel…

For a better understanding of how memory works, how to learn with ease, we should look into the emotional world first, and how emotions are directly connected to your ability to learn, remember, and retrieve information.

In the first article about memory, I explained in short what memory is and introduced to you my simple technique how I improved my memory, because it is all about attitude and how you want to handle a problem rather than giving excuses why learning, remembering or retrieving information is so hard.

Positive and negatives emotions

We understand them very easily. For example; relief is a pleasurable feeling, but for example, anger as negative emotion can evoke more than just one emotional movement. Generally, negative emotions are more complex to explain, feel, and deal with.

It comes down to the evolution and nature why we are experiencing more often negative emotions. Negative emotions narrow your attention and action. In contrast, positive emotional states tend to broaden your focus and encourage you to be playful and explore.

Negative emotions

Not talking now about thoughts connected to your conscious mind but the emotions connected to your subconscious state of mind. Most emotions come from deep inside your subconscious mind, and when they come they can affect your thinking, and your thoughts. Subconscious mind affect your every day’s thinking by 95%, the rest 5% is your conscious level in your mind- thinking. But as I said your thinking is influenced by what comes from subconsciousness, and this part of your mind you can’t easily control.

When you learn, study or face a problem it is important to know how these movements in your mind work to be able to control how you think.

It is all about your attitude towards a problem you are facing. Attitude carves your character, and character is your destiny. Never turn away from a problem you have to deal with. Problem is actually not a problem but an energy cluster just like everything else around, radiating into space, and if you turn away from it, it will come to you from the back.

So, how does this finding of emotions helps you to learn with ease?

It is very important to understand that what you think about your learning/studying/memorizing is directly influenced by your emotions. Who is managing your emotions then? It is only you who determines the way you feel about your studying that it is so hard to learn this, and even if you learn it, you will forget it anyway. Wow, what an attitude!

Don’t make your studying harder than it is, doesn’t even say it, and don’t feel this way. Set your mood right, and change your attitude, try to feel better, make your brain think you simply love studying, and studying is easy. Because you are saying to yourself a true lie, you will literally laugh because you made yourself foolish. Yes, this is the type of lie which helps. Your brain starts releasing chemicals to feel joy and euphoria. Your emotions residing in the subconscious mind will adjust, so will do your thoughts, and you will discover that learning is easy. Read the complete article about lies here.

Remember, trying to feel this way is not enough because it comes from curiosity, and curiosity broadens your spectre of vision- this is good for playing. You need to want it from the bottom of your heart, you need to be determined, persistent, and most importantly patient. These are the attributes of shaping your character not only perfect for learning but generally for living. Yep, your whole life will become easier. By the way, I am talking from my own experience.

Complex emotions

Emotions such as love, and jealousy, are the combinations of the basic positive and negative emotions. Love is a whole big chapter about it, so only in short; you can feel love as a mother to your child, and when your child would be in a dangerous situation you will act the way you would not normally act. You get into protective/ defensive mode, your body reactions will be faster, stronger, and your senses will be sharper, your focus will become narrower to get your child into safety.

Or you can fall in love very deeply with your partner. Instead of focus, and having the feeling you are firmly rooted to the ground, you will feel like you fly, unable to focus, and concentrate…No, you don’t have scattered emotions and thoughts, and you actually concentrate on your loved one. It is a nice feeling to fall in love, deeply. Yep, for the ones who didn’t find the true love yet, it’s a mixture of feelings they can’t really be explained, they need to be experienced…

But, if the other half doesn’t love you any more, your feelings of euphoria taking you very high, will drop down, and it goes to sadness. Actually, you start feeling like you are truly hurt, and run down. This is the moment where you have scattered emotions, thoughts, and you start asking yourself ‘why’, well, thats why. Welcome to life! Feelings are very complex, and sometimes they are even harder to control.

Feeling emotions; two types of emotions

Did you know you have emotions about your emotions? These are known as ‘secondary emotions’ about your ‘primary emotions’. For example; you might be ashamed of your feelings of fear, and hide them, leading to feelings of loneliness and isolation. It is believed that the phenomena of having feelings about our feelings are the root of many of our emotional difficulties.

This is the reason why I put emotions with memory into one article. How you can learn new stuff when you consider learning as difficult to handle? This is your first feeling about it, and then when you actually study, you discover you are not able to study or learn something – you expected this to happen. You wanted it this way, so it happened!

Then from your findings, the secondary feelings kicked in, and they only confirmed what you knew, taking you deeper down, leading to sadness, and lack of energy, disappointment or even isolation…

Then you start giving yourself so many questions why? I know why, that’s why…! That is the best answer to such question ‘why’.

Whenever you have a question like ‘why’ (action), it requires an answer (reaction). Not always the answer comes or when it comes it might be wrong.

The way I see it;

It is easier to get disturbed by many things around you than to focus on one particular thing but if you do manage to put your emotions aside, and concentrate on the subject you have to deal with in a controlled way, learning, and generally life becomes easier.

It’s all about focus and concentration. A human brain is unable to deal with more than with one task at a time just like a computer does. When you study, don’t get disturbed by your thoughts thinking of anything else. Make yourself think that when you are studying, memorizing is easy. Make a structural plan what and when you will be learning, and how much.

It is all about little things, if you see yourself improving, hitting your targets, it will encourage you to study even more, easier in a shorter time. This is what happened to me when I was studying. At beginning I found it hard but eventually I found my how to approach learning with ease.

Memory can be trained at any age, but it can also go the other way where you will feel like you are unable to memorize a single name or phone number. Disruption is a major factor when studying, learning, dealing with a problem, and eventually retrieving information.

It is a lack of training, will, focus, persistence, and patience. Yes, your memory can be trained but you need to want it, and feel it like you know it already before you even learn it.

I haven’t intentionally mentioned the techniques the ‘top athletes’ in memorizing information are using, because even they have to learn how to control the mind, more accurately how to control their thoughts by controlling their emotions, and learning how to focus.

Attitude carves your character, and character is your destiny.
